The Propagandists’ Playbook How Conservative Elites Manipulate Search and Threaten Democracy

Media literacy can sometimes spread disinformation - with a little help from search engine algorithms

The Propagandists’ Playbook peels back the layers of the right-wing media manipulation machine to reveal why its strategies are so effective and pervasive, while also humanizing the people whose worldviews and media practices conservatism embodies. Based on interviews and ethnographic observations of two Republican groups over the course of the 2017 Virginia gubernatorial race—including the author’s firsthand experience of the 2017 Unite the Right rally—the book considers how Google algorithms, YouTube playlists, pundits, and politicians can manipulate audiences, reaffirm beliefs, and expose audiences to more extremist ideas, blurring the lines between reality and fiction. Francesca Tripodi argues that conservatives who embody the Christian worldview give authoritative weight to original texts and interrogate the media using the same tools taught to them in Bible study—for example, using Google to “fact check” the news. The result of this practice, tied to conservative marketing tactics, is more than a reaffirmation of existing beliefs: it is a radicalization of content and a changing of narratives adopted by the media. Tripodi also demonstrates the pervasiveness of white supremacy in the conservative media ecosystem, as well as its mainstream appeal, scope, and spread.

Radicalization is gradual - and not confined to marginalized members of global societies

This literature review examines cross-disciplinary work on radicalization to situate, historicize, frame, and better understand the present concerns around online radicalization and far-right extremist and fringe movements. We find that research on radicalization is inextricably linked to the post-9/11 context in which it emerged, and as a result is overly focused on studying the other. Applying this research to the spread of far-right ideas online does not account for the ways in which the far-right’s endorsement of white supremacy and racism holds historical, normative precedent in the United States. Further, radicalization research is rife with uncertainties, ranging from definitional ambiguity to an inability to identify any simplistic, causal models capable of fully explaining the conditions under which radicalization occurs. Instead, there are multiple possible pathways to radicalization, and while the internet does not cause individuals to adopt far-right extremist or fringe beliefs, some technological affordances may aid adoption of these beliefs through gradual processes of socialization. We conclude that the term “radicalization” does not serve as a useful analytical frame for studying the spread of far-right and fringe ideas online. Instead, potential analytical frameworks better suited to studying these phenomena include theories prominent in the study of online communities, conversion, mainstreaming, and sociotechnical theories of media effects.

Performing spiritual leadership is more fraught in times of political polarization

Bridging scholarly perspectives across disciplines and within communication subfields on spirituality, civil religion, and storytelling in political discourse, Eddy argues that the U.S. president performs as a spiritual leader in ways scholars have generally overlooked – not necessarily by invoking a traditional ideology, but by summoning a moral language of solidarity through a compelling, unitary vision and uniquely “American” values. Drawing on a multimethod design combining a qualitative content analysis of six U.S. presidents’ speeches during times of crisis (N = 19) with survey data (N = 374), this research first assesses how modern presidents have employed a language of spiritual leadership over time and then examines public perceptions of these performances, exploring the roles of identity and partisanship in these perceptions. Results show the performativity of spiritual leadership may fail, to some extent, because of growing partisanship: In a “post-sorting” America with fewer cross-cutting identities, appeals to the “sacredness” of the presidency may no longer be able to take root. This research offers a framework for examining the language and performance of spiritual leadership in a variety of political and discursive contexts.
