Daniel Kreiss on responding to January 6

Writing on Medium, Daniel Kreiss reflects on what researchers must do differently after January 6, 2021.

Only by acknowledging that January 6th was political violence, with political objectives, can we start to address the underlying tensions in our political community.

Daniel Kreiss

Kreiss proposes four shifts in research:

  1. Moving from talk of polarization to status threats
  2. Centering power and interest in disinformation and propaganda studies
  3. Integrating work from comparative and institutional researchers into media studies
  4. Avoiding the temptation to individualize the events of January 6

These reflections accompanied our joint event with George Washington University's Institute for Data, Democracy, and Politics, "The Capitol Coup One Year Later".
