Sourojit Ghosh is an Assistant Professor in the School of Data and Information Sciences, where his research addresses the harmful impacts of emerging technologies (such as Generative AI systems) upon historically marginalized populations often overlooked in traditional fairness research. His work takes interdisciplinary, mixed methods approaches combining machine learning, social justice, data feminism, and ethics, adopting a sociotechnical perspective towards mitigating harmful impacts of emerging technologies experienced by direct users/audiences, and democratizing the design of such systems by breaking barriers to participatory design for users without the technical expertise often prerequisite for such participation. Sourojit questions the ethical tensions created when large-scale systems, often built on cheap labor from marginalized communities in the 'Global South' produce harmful outcomes for these same populations, as their experiences remain largely overlooked in traditional fairness research.
Sourojit received his doctorate in Human Centered Design and Engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle, and also holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, with a minor in Creative Writing. Outside of research, Sourojit enjoys watching and playing soccer, and writing short fiction thrillers.
